This afternoon I had occasion to remonstrate with a gent who was attempting to bung a "For Sale" board in my front flower bed. He explained that he'd thought my flower bed, and indeed my kitchen window, belonged to the house next door.

I opined that it might be better if he were to make sure of these things before ramming large pieces of wood into people's gardens, especially as he'd squashed a clump of my grape hyacinths in the process.

He was vaguely apologetic but rather more concerned about where he could stick his sign. I bit my tongue and didn't offer any suggestions in that regard...

You have more restraint than I do!

You don't wanna squash grape hyacinth, it just makes them angry! I firmly believe that when the Triffids take over, they'll just be mutant grape hyacinth come to complete their conquest.

Hee! Perhaps they'll creep up on him in the night and take their bulbous revenge :)

I have a weedy back yard being gradually taken over by grape hyacinths. I figure they and the creeping thistle can fight it out.

As to the idiot ... I too would have had to bite my tongue HARD to keep from giving him the most appropriate response to his careless assumption.

He had a big stick :)

I was fairly sharp with him to begin with, but he appeared to be bewildered rather than malicious, so there was no profit in heaping abuse on his head once he'd ceased and desisted.

I wish I'd thought of that!

I believe my first utterance may indeed have had an "oi!" in it though - I think it was something along the lines of "Oi! No! That's my garden!" shouted from the kitchen - which only served to confuse him, because he thought my kitchen was next door's kitchen.....

Now I wonder where you'd have suggested he stick it...

Back in his van, of course! [innocent expression]

I wouldn't have been able to bite my tongue soon enough for him not to be able to read what I meant to say by the expression on my face - even if I hadn't uttered an actual sound. :)

Go you. :)

He was clearly not the sharpest chisel in the toolbox, so it would have been unkind really. I might drop his bosses an email shortly and suggest that their instructions could benefit from being rather more clear.
