Can someone explain to me, in words of one syllable or fewer, how a mini camcorder, which lives in a perspex box, only slightly bigger than itself, with a rubber seal around the edge, can become unspeakably sticky while in storage?

I've just spent several hours cleaning same and am at a total loss as to what can have happened.
