Can someone explain to me, in words of one syllable or fewer, how a mini camcorder, which lives in a perspex box, only slightly bigger than itself, with a rubber seal around the edge, can become unspeakably sticky while in storage?

I've just spent several hours cleaning same and am at a total loss as to what can have happened.

When in doubt, it's the cat's fault.

Heh :) You may have a point there :)

A wizard did it. ;)

Those guys are such a nuisance! Swanning around in their pointy hats and greasifying things! Bah! :)

You shouldn't store such things right above the stove. Fumes get into anything y'know.

Nice try, but no, it wasn't stored in the kitchen, so that seems unlikely :)

How long has it been stored for? Does it still charge up and work normally?

It's possible that there might have been a slight leakage from the battery - maybe just vapour rather than liquid - which has affected the material of the camcorder's case. Are there any signs of leakage on the battery? The sealed box would have stopped any vapour from dissipating.

It's been stored for a while, but (and I'll have to check with Rob about this) I don't think the batteries were in it - he tends to be pretty careful about that sort of thing, besides which he uses rechargeables in it, so they'd have come out to be charged after the last use.

When it was fired up and used it worked fine, so hopefully that's not it! Thanks for the suggestion though.

You're welcome. In that case, I can only think that some (probably plastic) part of the camcorder itself is slowly exuding some kind of substance - possibly a plasticiser - which has remained on the surface of the case instead of dissipating into the air. I'd think it'd be best to store it in a non-airtight case from now on, and see whether the problem recurs.

Well the reason I was cleaning it is that we're selling it on Ebay, so hopefully it won't be a problem :)

It's only a tiny one - a bike helmet cam in fact.

Ah; IC. I hope you get a good price for it. With any luck, its new owner will be able to catch some eejits with it.

so far we have 42 people watching the auction, so I'm hopeful of a bidding frenzy at some point :)
