The Ruby in the Smoke by Philip Pullman. 209 pages.

When Sally Lockhart's father dies in a shipwreck, she's sent to live with an unpleasant aunt. But Sally is no Jane Eyre - she has been brought up to be bold and self-sufficient and carries a pistol in her handbag. And she isn't convinced by the account of her father's death she's been handed, so she sets out to find out the truth, unaware that she may get a great deal more than she bargained for….

I saw the tv adaptation of this with Billie Piper and was curious to see how much they'd changed from the book - and the answer seems to be "not very much at all". I've rarely seen a book and its televised version so close together. I very much enjoyed both and will be looking for a copy of the second book.

I read this book yonks ago, having absolutely adored the His Dark Material trilogy and in want of more Pullman. I'd entirely forgotten how much I enjoyed the book, and would have to re-read it and look for the rest of the series so I could remember what happened. Thanks for the reminder! I'm glad you enjoyed it as well. Our book tastes are surprisingly similar, that never fails to amuse me. :)

I actually liked this a lot better than the His Dark Materials books - I've got the third one of those hanging about somewhere but haven't bothered reading it yet. I'm honestly not sure what it is that puts me off them, but something just doesn't work about them for me.

The third one is great, absolutely great - it is different from the first two ones, I liked the ideas behind the story, his idea of "death" and such. Very intelligently written.

I love the Sally Lockhardt trilogy, too! :)

Thanks - I'll probably read the third one at some point, I just haven't been in the right mood for it yet :)
