We installed a catflap at our last house. The cat's response was predictable - he wouldn't have anything to do with it. We ended up using it as a vent for the tumble drier.

What you should have done, of course, is to forbid the cat, on pain of pain, to go anywhere near it. He would have been popping in and out of it every five minutes :-)
