I've been maintaining our website for some time now and have always done all the coding by hand in a text editor. I've always been a bit sniffy about web page making programs, probably due to the fact that the first one I tried was an early version of Dreamweaver, which was pants.

But when Rob wanted to quickly put together a site for his photographs, he got a recommendation for a program called Rapidweaver. He tried it, found it worked pretty well and got his site sorted in two shakes of a lamb's tail.

So when he decided the company website needed a major makeover he suggested he teach me how to use Rapidweaver.

So this is where I eat humble pie. It was pretty brilliant really. I haven't done the whole site yet, and I haven't got things exactly the way I want them yet, but I was able, in a few hours today, to do stuff to the site tht would likely have taken weeks (and much hair-tearing) if I'd attempted it by hand.

So I'm a convert :-)

Opens one interested eye...

So... is this freeware? I have always done my webpages with pure html. No special tool but a notepad and some code colouring. Purist me. But I'd be willing to try something new...

No it's not free I'm afraid (although you can download a trial version to see if you like it or not) - and it's Mac only.

In case you're still interested, the web site is here :- http://www.realmacsoftware.com/rapidweaver/

Oh, no Macs in this household I'm afraid. Oh well, the few things I do for webpages I can do with html no problem.

Out of curiosity... Were you sniffy about the mark-up they generated or something else?

The ones I tried seemed to be nearly as much effort to use as doing stuff by hand with less control over the results and less chance of finding the bit that needed fixing. And the code produced seemed pretty bloated too.

Of course that was a few years ago now, so things have probably improved hugely since then.

This tool(with a paid-for add-on) let me set up a new shop page on the site in a couple of hours. It looks nicer than the old one and its easier to navigate and to rearrange and add new stuff to. I am well chuffed :-)
