Woke up at about 4am this morning and heard an owl outside (quite close outside actually :-)).

From later research it appears to have been a Tawny Owl.

February is apparently the start of their breeding season, so there may be owlets later. Splendid.

Here too! Last night, quite late in the evening, I was getting ready for bed, when I heard a tawny owl hoot several times from somewhere pretty close to, or possibly in, our back garden. I've heard them many times, when I've been outside after dark, in previous years; it's the first time I've heard one from indoors though.

They must be getting ready to breed. Let's hope for dry weather, otherwise they might get too wet to woo... :)

Grone :-)

I'll be back in minute, I have to help that joak down to the Post Office to pick up its pension :-)

I'm fairly certain that our ecologist at work once told me that there was only one species of native british owl that actually hoots. The rest all make random other bird noises from screeches to silence. But I could be wrong.

I think you're probably right - my bird book certainly describes Barn Owls as making "shrieks and hisses" (sounds like me before I've jad me coffee :-)).

There's a page here (http://www.owlpages.com/sounds.php) which has owl calls from zillions of different wols around the world...

Sweet! Do you have places around where they can breed? Hollow trees, old attics?

I heard some hoot the other days too. You could be right with the breeding season. I hope the cats don't catch any.

I don't know that any of the trees near our house are suitable, but I expect there are some down by the reservoir, which is quite close by as the owl flies :-)
